Date: 2004-12-02 01:22 pm (UTC)My take on Bush's support for the gay marriage amendment was always that it was an easy and cheap way for Bush to win votes from the religous right, while knowing that he'd never have to back it up in actual policy. It made him appear safe on family values but it was gesture politics.

In contrast, the Leader of the Council and the Executive were given a 2.5% increase on last year’s salaries. Cllr Hitchins is now the third highest paid council leader in Great Britain, claiming a £54,630 allowance.
His 8 strong appointed Executive are the highest paid Executive Councillors in the country, each taking home £42,023, including their basic councillors’ allowance of £8,929.
