Yes, that Intrepid Fox thing I was plugging earlier? Postponed 'til next week, apparently. So don't go tonight, there's good chaps.

From Neil Gaiman's journal: And we thought Clause 28 was bad.
"Allen said no state funds should be used to pay for materials that foster homosexuality. He said that would include nonfiction books that suggest homosexuality is acceptable and fiction novels with gay characters. "
I'm so glad I don't live in the US.

Am currently debating whether to drop in on the works Saturnalia bash and claim some/all of my eight free drinks (oh, the generosity) before B Movie.

Frankly I think he'd be better off stopping people writing books with criminals in them. Their actions are illegal outside of the bookworld SO WHY SHOULD THEY BE LEGAL IN BOOK FORM eh?

Also, what you said about living in the US. (Their bread is terrible as for that tosh that passes as chocolate).

Apparently there is a very nice Stilton produced somewhere in upstate NY but I don't believe it because it was mentioned in the same breath as PEARS and frankly I don't approve of the fruit/cheese hybrid.

Hmmm...a bit of a generalisation there, as wensleydale/cranberry and stilton/apricot are both jolly nice. But I'm not too keen on pears in any context.

In fairness, I reckon if the government were subsidising books about criminals where the criminals got away with it, someone would have something to say. Except, say, Goldilocks.

The fun part is convincing people which novels contain homosexuality.

It amuses me when people accuse me of making things up about Dumas, for example.

See also: those Greeks threatening to sue over the bisexuality in Alexander. Maybe they should travel back in time and try to stop Alexander gaying up instead? You know, throw women in front of him as he tries to dive on his catamite, that sort of thing.

I guessed that this would be unconstitutional and it is. In the case of Board of Education, Island Trees School District v. Pico (1982), the Supreme Court ruled that "Local school boards may not remove books from school library shelves simply because they dislike the ideas contained in those books".

Yes but 1982 = before the current vogue for fvcking around with the Constitution to suit a Republican Right agenda.
(I would be very surprised if this bill became law, true. But it shouldn't even have got as far as it has)

The current vogue for fvcking around with the Constitution to suit a Republican Right agenda is never actually going to succeed in fvcking around with the Constitution to suit a Republican Right agenda because it's almost impossible - from memory I think you need a 2/3 majority in both houses of Congress plus the support of 3/4 of the states.

My take on Bush's support for the gay marriage amendment was always that it was an easy and cheap way for Bush to win votes from the religous right, while knowing that he'd never have to back it up in actual policy. It made him appear safe on family values but it was gesture politics.

Islington Council last night forced through a package of cuts to opposition and scrutiny councillors.

The new councillors’ pay proposals saw the Leader of the Opposition’s allowance cut by £3,000, and the Chair of Overview Committee, in charge of scrutinising the work of the Council, slashed by 50%.

In contrast, the Leader of the Council and the Executive were given a 2.5% increase on last year’s salaries. Cllr Hitchins is now the third highest paid council leader in Great Britain, claiming a £54,630 allowance.

His 8 strong appointed Executive are the highest paid Executive Councillors in the country, each taking home £42,023, including their basic councillors’ allowance of £8,929.
