It's a bit close out there, isn't it? Feels like walking through soup. A storm would be very welcome.

[livejournal.com profile] guntrip's post reminds me of one of my two brilliant legal innovations from last night*. Ticket touting is, so far as I understand, illegal. Non-online ticket touts normally stand within earshot of the venue security, certainly near to the venue. So why don't the police arrest them? The ones I saw last night were on Tottenham Court Road, an area where they can be found almost every night, in the heart of the heavily-policed West End. They're fairly indiscriminate in their solicitations. One plainclothes officer with a bit of uniformed backup around the corner, and you're done. Why isn't it happening?

*The other was that anyone walking down Oxford Street texting, and looking at their phone rather than the people around them, should have their thumbs chopped off.

Nor was there any compelling medical evidence whatsoever that masturbation was dangerous in the early-to-mid twentieth century, but plenty of Respected Scientists still peddled that idea.

that was only to try to keep them in with the church, while they peddled ye olde evolutionary theory, though.

Sometimes, maybe. Other times it was influenced by Eastern thinking. And I think it's important to bear in mind that most of them seem genuinely to have believed it - they weren't lying for advantage.

I have heard far dafter theories advanced in all seriousness in debates on this topic. Also, your icon is very deadpan.

you think? I thought it was quite cheery myself. Nice and bright considering its a Molko rip-off. Maybe slightly too abstract for silliness though.

"its a Molko rip-off"

I think the 'masturbation is harmful' brigade had quite a lot in common with the '35mph = gruesome organ failure' brigade, in that only fools believed them. In fact I would question whether peddlers of either theory could be said to have been well-respected sceincetists of their day.

Hindsight's a wonderful thing. Sure, we can now classify anyone who believed them as 'fools'. At the time...well, he may not be a scientist but Sir Robert Baden-Powell, O.M., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.C.B., Lord Baden-Powell of Gilwell was promoting the idea, and he certainly seems to have been fairly well respected judging by that alias.

If I was there (and I wasn't, oldster fans) I would have said, "Shut yer gob Lord Baden-Powell O.M., G.C.M.G., G.C.V.O., K.C.B! You ain't no sciencetists! You is merely a Victorian moraliser, who may retain popular appeal with sympathisers of Victorian morals, but your time is over, old timer. The kids are alright, and they know where it's at", and then I would have punched his silly face. Did he have a beard? I bet he did, didn't he?

See! He's not to be trusted!

NB I was in the cubs and then the sea-scouts, and they have had to constantly re-write the rules cause old Lord BP's ideas have fallen so farther and farther grace ever since his demise.
