The lovely [livejournal.com profile] serious_k took me to gay eighties vampire musical (yes, you can see why I got the invite) Dragula at Heaven last night. Hmmmmmmmm.
I've not been to see any of these back-catalogue musicals, but this is pretty much how I imagine them to be. A series of classics (here a variety of camp eighties tracks, rather than all one band) strung together by a fairly archetypal plot, and the cracks papered over with some pantomime-style audience interaction, emphasising that really everyone's here for a good time rather than art.
And I had a good time, certainly (though perhaps not as good a time as K, simply because she got eyed up by the resident lesbian and I didn't). The singers almost all had very good voices (even the one tasked with covering Frankie's Power of Love managed it with aplomb), some of the jokes were funny, there were even moments when the sweet-boy-seduced-from-lover-by-showbiz plot was actually moving.
However, I was there on a comp, and they're charging more than £20 for this. I didn't have *that* good a time. Had I paid, I might not feel so indulgent towards the performance.
But then, I've never quite understood the public's tastes. Witness that time I bet a friend I'd eat a Duran Duran single if none of the romo bands had a top 30 hit within six months.

Watched hotly-tipped animated sketch show Monkey Dust when I got in. Not bad, but it's far too obvious that they all want to be Chris Morris.

On the tube this morning, someone smelled exactly as my first girlfriend used to when we were together. I'm not sure if it was perfume, shampoo, some combination of the two or what, but it was still strange to have such a visceral reminder, and even more so given I had no idea who it was.

And this is a total disgrace. No one is disputing that the 'victim' consented fully to being killed and eaten. There's not even any suggestion that the killer pressured him - with a previous partner he had got as far as marking out the cuts in marker on his body before the chap (understandably) changed his mind and went home. Even so close to the fruition of his fantasy, he let him go. This man is not a threat to anyone. So what the fvck business is it of the law's?

bit wrong about the law thing there......

surly that's gotta at least be assisted suicide (which is illegl) so the guy broke the law and got caught....

clearly as it should be as the law stands at the moment?

Oh yeah, they're in keeping with the letter of the current law, certainly. What I'm saying is that the law is an ass. Like the drug laws, or Operation Spanner, or indeed the euthanasia laws, this is unwarranted intrusion on areas of personal morality.

operation spanner - here's me WHA?

other things: discuss......

drug laws..... drug are bad m'kay.... I don't see what ppl compain about - if ewe wanna do it the break da law and don't get caught..... euthanasia is dodgy and imho opinion need changing but if after it was changed it was still illegal for non medical prodessionals to kill ppl then I wouldn't have a problem wiv it........

personal morality..... a phraise rarly used consitanly by ppl..............

I'm very moral. It's just a tailor-made morality rather than an off-the-peg one.
The drug laws are moronic. Money is going to organised crime which could be going to fund hospitals were drugs legal and taxed. People are poisoned by impurities when there's no need.

Operation Spanner was a load of gays mutilating each other (with each other's consent) in Bolton or somewhere. There was a long and costly and pointless trial, although I think they got off (hahaha), I can't remember. Anyroad, the point is that giving your consent doesn't entitle someone to cause you physical harm.

Rats wrote a huge reply then the internet broke. take 2...

I offered to eat my own liver if Parklandsway weren't on the cover of the NME within a year - oops - did you like them?

I love that smell deja vu thing - rapport aftershave and pipe snoke remind me of my beloved departed Grandad, 'cool water' aftershave smells like sex and the graphics corridor at college smelt like my infant school.

Laws suck. But then as I am oh to frequently reminded, people suck quite often too.

Monkey Dust - I caught the last 10mins of that (the Nazi UK/Irish thingy onwards) and thought it was pretty good in a random 'oh, what the f### is this?' kind of way. I had no idea it was going to be on.

Re: smells - my ex girlfriend used to work in Chester Lush (and used to smell permamently of their products), so everytime I walk past a f###ing Lush i'm reminded of her.

I'd say it was assisted suicide as well, but then somebody would have to prove the dead bloke's consent was given while he was still sound of mind and body. Consenting to being stabbed and eaten is not the action of a sane person. I don't think the law had any choice.

Defining sanity like that is exactly the sort of bullshit the USSR used to pull. "Oh, if you fail to see that this is the best country ever, you're mental, so we'll lock you up."
I don't want to be killed and eaten. If anyone out there does, good luck to them, I sincerely hope they get their wish, and in the process make someone who wants to kill and eat them very happy too.

I don't think it's possible to compare those two ways of defining sanity. If someone wnats to be killed and then eaten I am absolutely sure that that desire is irrational to the point of insanity because it is contrary to the desire that a healthy animal should feel to survive. I'm not trying to force my own brnad of conventionality on anyone, but healthy people shouldn't want to die.

I have spent too much of my life being assumed to be mad/joking for expressing unusual views on anything from the Spice Girls to the fabric of reality. Consequently, I try never to do anyone else the same discourtesy. Bloke wants to be eaten, it's his lookout. Evolutionary psychology can fvck off - most of our achievements come through subverting or restraining our 'natural' impulses.

why the fug should it?????

personally I belive there needs to be a controlled way for certain ppl to perform euthanasia but to just clear cut legalise it is wrong (imho).............

From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
'legalise it' doesn't mean 'make it a failsafe excuse for murderers'. It means put in place a legal framework within which it can happen. Which is exactly what you're saying too.
