Let the world around us just fall apart

Sometimes annoying little details result from Livejournal being based in the US; for instance, it's still dating today as July 1st 2007, not as Day One, Year One of the Most Piously Clean-Lunged Reich. And I have no reason to believe it was particularly his idea, but isn't it appropriate that this is coming in just as that dour Presbyterian sourpuss settles in at Number 10? I mean, what happened to the degenerate West being sunk in hedonism? At this rate we won't even be upsetting the islamists soon, and that has to be a bad sign. Anyone know of any London pubs taking the distinctly King Bacchus step of becoming an embassy?

All of which said, I only had half a fag across last night's two clubs; for my sins, I'm just not a smoker. I know that, if I ever want to make it as a gay icon, I really ought to have pointedly ignored the Mystery Fax Machine Orchestra, but they're just too much fun. And during a typically energetic New Royal Family set (complete with a mysterious new temptress on bass), I ended up handing out the chocolate digestives because Dickon didn't want to in order to show The Kids that hey, I was just playing a character in that video!
Thoughts at Prom Night:
'Nothing's Gonna Stop Us Now' by Starship is possibly the greatest love song ever written.
I really was a fool not to buy that Billy Idol Best Of in Fopp because 'hey, I can always get it another time, right?'

I've been thinking for a while that making the Doctor into the last son of a dead planet played up his Superman resonances, but the Earth spinning backwards to represent time reversal? A signal watch, near as dammit, for Martha Olsen? And this in a story which I was already thinking reminded me of JLA: Rock of Ages (NB - this is a good thing. A very good thing). And then there was the Flash Gordon ending - did he steal Mrs Saxon's body? Or was she the Rani all along? Oh, and Jack being the Face of Boe - which sounds like the sort of spoiler people make up as a joke but blow me, it works! Oh, I love it. All of it. Enough even to buy the Titanic. And...I don't normally like 'form a circle and destroy it with the power of love' resolutions, but this one, this worked. But then, I always like seeing the Doctor stealing the role of that other joker who still thinks christmas is about him. In fact, there's a story idea, not so much for a Who christmas special as for the Easter season kick-off...
'The Infinite Quest' in the morning was also fairly entertaining; a nice little romp for the kids, and then for the geeks the thrill of hearing Tennant talk about the Vampires and the Great Old Ones...oh, and for those who associate him with a different sort of thrill, on the Who edition of The Weakest Link, Anne Robinson asked him which letter was in 'dangle' but not 'gland'.

Y'know, whilst watching Who last night (which I'm glad someone else enjoyed, btw), I did think that it had that widescreen feel of Warren Ellis' Authority with a bit of nutso Grant Morrison thrown in.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 12:09 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I suppose some of the reports of what the Master had done to the world did have the feel of Regis' devastations on the Sliding Earth. But Captain Jack didn't kick his head off, more's the pity.

I'm surprised at how negative some of the reactions have been. I thought it was pretty much note-perfect.

[identity profile] stu-n.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 07:36 pm (UTC)(link)
I've just watched the repeat, to make sure that my critical faculties didn't somehow switch themselves off last night; and no, they didn't, it was still gloriously insane, and made perfect sense.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:31 pm (UTC)(link)
Exactly! It was the good kind of crazy!

[identity profile] sbp.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 10:20 am (UTC)(link)
I was expecting not to like it - I wasn't a big fan of the Cyberman end-of-season, but it all fit together well and brought in strands from earlier episodes and seasons which made it feel right. And it was definitely a bit unusual but for some reason I quite enjoyed it. Even gollum-in-a-cage Tennant didn't put me off.

The pictures of the rockets were a bit hokey but they just looked like something out of Metropolis or something which just added to the feel. And there were great moments here and there.

[identity profile] moleintheground.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 03:58 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, i just wish they'd had another million quid to throw at the episode.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:32 pm (UTC)(link)
I wouldn't have objected to that, but it was glorious as was!

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:02 pm (UTC)(link)
You are such a silly head!!

I want to watch mannequin now though...

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:13 pm (UTC)(link)
Why am I silly? I am shocked!

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:21 pm (UTC)(link)
You only managed half a fag! Heh fag...

Was Prom Night good? One day I will go again, perhaps when I am slimmer and can wear a VERY GOOD dress :D

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:26 pm (UTC)(link)
It was, yes. Very full! And very, very eighties.

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:33 pm (UTC)(link)
*dance*

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:05 pm (UTC)(link)
BTW I think def not Rani. It's much more beautiful to have her as someone gone completely mad by showing her the end of the universe. The reveal about Jack and the big bad were really good, actually enough to save the episode but FFS you could have drove a tank through those plot holes. Also ending with Martha was really amazing. I LOVE Martha, don't see how she managed to 'walk the earth' in a year though.

I kinda wish Simm would be the master again though, but clearly not gonna happen. Sigh.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:18 pm (UTC)(link)
What plot holes?

I do sincerely doubt it's the Rani, but I think the Master might have nicked her body (and so got her to shoot him as an escape route)...that laugh did sound fairly masculine, after all.
Having her go mad from the end of everything does work too, but wouldn't it be a bit similar to what happened with the Toclafane?

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
yes but they are both human. I would have thought that at the end of everything one would go completely mad, because like she says, there is no point to anything. Sob.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:22 pm (UTC)(link)
Though it's not all bad, we have had a preview of the universe after this one and it looks quite entertaining. And some entities survived from the one before ours - the Nestene, the Great Intelligence, Fenric...so maybe some humans will too, somehow...

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:31 pm (UTC)(link)
But not be scary killing balls?

I don't really mind if there is no point to anything though, it makes things more interesting.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:46 pm (UTC)(link)
Happy goth! ;p

*drives tank*

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:30 pm (UTC)(link)
How did the Doctor know there was going to be a countdown in a years time, so he could tell Martha to go and make everyone think 'doctor' at that point? Why did he risk everyone's lives with trying to 'break free'when he knew later on that he was going to be 'restored'? If Martha suspected the doctor was dead then why did she carry on, because it was only him who saved everything? Also if they went 'back' then surely all the guards and stuff would remember as they were still on the ship? If not don't you think they'd wonder why they were no longer being all Waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa at the president being killed and were actually somewhere else? If the doctor was aware enough to tune himself into psychic network and stuff, why did he let himself be treated like a dog by the master? He was with it enough to tell martha what to do.

Re: *drives tank*

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:51 pm (UTC)(link)
I presumed he just knew there'd be a countdown at some point (remember how the Master says he can never resist one?), and had people waiting for that. And it was being announced from loudspeakers &c, so everyone would know when it was time.

The dog behaviour was presumably just to lull the Master into a sense of security, and to keep himself at the hub of Archangel. Perhaps even the escape attempt was part of that - as with the gun, the Master would know the Doctor would try *something*, so best to throw him off the scent of just what.

Martha carried on because it was the only chance they had. And Hell, perhaps that much psychic energy would at least temporarily have resurrected him, or at least created something like the Watcher from Logopolis.

The guards &c presumably do remember it all, but weren't they UNIT anyway? They're trained for that sort of craziness.

[identity profile] tintintin.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 05:10 pm (UTC)(link)
The masculine laugh was Simm - the scene was a complete steal from the end of FLASH GORDON, wherein the perished Ming's ring is retrieved from a pile of dust by an unknown lackey, accompanied by a disembodied cackle from Max Von Sydow.

"And then there was the Flash Gordon ending "

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:34 pm (UTC)(link)
I did register the reference...

(Anonymous) 2007-07-01 06:09 pm (UTC)(link)
I agree about her shooting him as an escape route, but I don't think he nicked her body - rather I think Lucy herself is going to bring her hubby back to life of her own choice and when the Master next appears, it will end with the two of them disappearing off with an evil chuckle.

At least I hope that's the case. Brilliant sinister callous nihilistic villainess, that Lucy. We should see more of her.

(Anonymous) 2007-07-01 06:14 pm (UTC)(link)
Here here. I sighed a sigh of relief when I saw those red fingernails picking up the ring - maybe they haven't sold her out and turned her into a goodie after all.

[identity profile] puzzled-anwen.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 06:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Yes, I thought it was totally obvious that she was shooting him so he didn't get trapped with goodie two-shoes Doctor, looking aaaaaaaafter him (I love the Doctor, but man, if I were the Master I wouldn't want that...)

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Broadly agreed. Although, last time Derek Jacobi was out his gay robot Master seemed OK with the horror if it all...

[identity profile] monkeyssk8.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:17 pm (UTC)(link)
I loved it as well, like really loved it. But the Dr. was saved by a mental transmission of a brain wave, so it wasn't really love or something, right?

Uhm, being a gay icon is about loving the schmoozy musical sound of MFMO and don't you forget it!

I'm so glad there is no more smoking HOOOORAY! Although it would be great if lj had the f-ing goat in a pub with a no smoking sign

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:20 pm (UTC)(link)
Hey, I don't make the rules - tell it to Callow and Wainwright!

There always has to be some sort of pseudoscientific or magical framework for power of love endings, I suppose - but I do think this one rang truer than most.

[identity profile] monkeyssk8.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:23 pm (UTC)(link)
oh right-o, I fergeted!

it wasn't really the power of love...it was SATELLITES and physic energy, so there!

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:27 pm (UTC)(link)
Well, quite. And not even by way of the sonic screwdriver, which was a pleasant surprise.

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:34 pm (UTC)(link)
also your tag has just reminded me. I had a dream you started going out with Martin. WHAT????

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:52 pm (UTC)(link)
Did you enjoy that, dear?

[identity profile] pippaalice.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 01:59 pm (UTC)(link)
not as much as you did, bo-boom-tish. ;)

[identity profile] myfirstkitchen.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 07:11 pm (UTC)(link)
I liked it lots (though Martha back ASAP, pls). I even made my mum like it - "Look Mummy, it's Jesus!"

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 06:34 am (UTC)(link)
Not that I have any problem with Martha, but I like the idea of a companion who's *about* (like, say, Rose's family were) yet not there every week. Also, it made internal sense.

[identity profile] peacockpunk.livejournal.com 2007-07-01 09:20 pm (UTC)(link)
...and the Titanic colliding with the TARDIS surely means that a two doctors christmas special is on the cards?

(didn't Eccles' Doctor mention being on the Titanic in Series One? With photographic evidence?)

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 06:37 am (UTC)(link)
Well, it was mentioned by the guy from the bank ads before he was shot, but yes, ish. Although a) I think it was him preventing some family from boarding it and b) where he'd have fitted that in is another question...

(I would love to see Ecclestone meet Tennant, but if they are doing that I'm surprised they've managed to keep it so quiet)

Anyway, you seem to have stopped coming to London again. Sort it aht!

[identity profile] peacockpunk.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 06:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Two Doctors in the hizzle. On the Titanizzle, just in time for Chrizzle. It's what baby Jizzle would want.

London? Dunno, like. Davidoff was meandering on about a monopoly pub crawl to be held quite soon...

I wouldve liked to turn up for SB/SBpicnic this weekend, but I'll be in Anglesey. Yeah, Anglesey. Stitch that.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-02 11:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In Yr Island Burning Yr Druidz?

I am not attempting Monopocrawl again, but if that's the Saturday we could sort something for the Sunday, perhaps.

And fvck that fake-ass bitch Jesus - he had his time with the festival he stole, but now the Doctor's stealing it back.

[identity profile] peacockpunk.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 06:26 pm (UTC)(link)
In other news - I purchased the Phonogram trade. Not read it yet, but on a casual flick through it looks v v interesting.

[identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com 2007-07-03 06:32 pm (UTC)(link)
To say the least! I am almost certain you will love it.
