Three good bands at last night's four band show, and a pleasing indie disco afters, but the New Cross Inn is a puzzling shape for a venue. The bar is a U within a basically square room - the bottom of the U being right in front of centre stage, so the natural place to watch the singer is also the narrowest spot in the place, and on the route to the loos. And just in case that's not bottleneck enough, they've put two tables right in front of the stage too! Madness.

Call me a humourless old feminist if you will, but a website where girls pose and flirt for money towards boob jobs strikes me as seriously messed-up.

FIGHT! Some very talented musicians (and him out of the K**ks) on which 'classic' albums suck.

I can't decide which amuses me more about the Britain's Got Talent wrongcock scandal: the Sun headline BRITAIN'S GOT PERVERTS or the detail that the sex offender in question originally claimed he was quitting the show over 'a problem with his organ'. Well, I suppose you could describe it that way...

Messed-up it is, but the fact that the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons spells BAAPS has got to be joke of even messed-up-er proportions.

Shamefully, I hadn't even spotted that! It does rather sound as though it should be an organisation headed up by Sid James in Carry On Fiddling With Breasts.

It has now bumped my hitherto favourite horribly inappropriate acronym into second place:

The Sexual Offences Research Initiative

If ever a word was not enough in such a situation, it's "sori".

I noticed that within 3 seconds. I am so much better than you. Also what have you got against the Kinks??? :S

I love the Kinks*! But they are neither quoted nor dissed in the article, unlike the unutterably mediocre Kooks.

Although Ray Davies does have a bit of a bad plastic surgery face these days.

I want something to kick. Am very restless.

It makes me suspect that Chris Morris is writing the news again.

Yeah, I was just a little disappointed that he could ever have thought otherwise.

At a Belfast gig, The Feline Dream once demanded that we walk onstage to 'Dachau Blues'. We held our ground and insisted on 'I'll Never Fall In Love Again'.

And remarkably, he even makes that beard work. I disagreed with what he wrote, but thinking about it, that I can't remember when I last listened to Nevermind does at least partially prove his point.

"Nevermind had a poisonous, pernicious influence. It legitimised suffering"

In other words (er, mine), it is the sick note for mardy children everywhere. You're a teenager, you're angry about everything! It doesn't mean you have genuine problems. Have a wash and cheer up, will you?

Also, mmm, beard.

It was hardly the first work of teenage angst! And it still stands up a great deal better than, say Wilfred tossing Owen, whose 'Oh why/Am I/so sensitive?' drivel was somehow mistaken for Art just because it was phrased as 'Oh why/Am I/in a trench?'

No, but it they are the current totem, wouldn't you say?

I'm not sure I'd go with the Owen comparisson though - toss it may be, but I have a lot more sympathy for the situation he was in than "Oh no, I've sold all these records, made all this money, the man is trying to steal my soul wah wah wah shut up shut up SHUT UP!"

Hmm. I really don't like Nirvana, can you tell? Not much sympathy around for a man who extricates himself from the gene pool *after* breeding.

OK, they are the daddies of the current lineage. But I still don't think Cobain was as bad as all that; he was a potentially very gifted pop songwriter who sadly grew up in a place and a scene that brought out the worst in him, artistically and personally. Hence, too many noise tracks and too few 'Serve The Servants'. Hence, being a self-indulgent prick.

when we were contemplating cover versions I had to listen to a fair bit of Nirvana. If he'd come of age in Studio 54, listening to Chic instead of Husker Du, I think Nirvana would have been one of the most glorious groups of all time.

Aidan, the promoter for Shot By Both Sides, told me last night that the venue is gonna be renovated and the area taken up by bar decreased, to address the very issues you point out. Which is good.

That sounds so classy. I'm pretty sure I went in there for a daytime pint once when it looked a bit wine-bar-y, come to think of it.

Meant to ask, vis-a-vis the film they were showing - did you used to have a song called 'The Incredible Shrinking Man', or am I getting you mixed up with someone else?

(Oh, and well done on getting the superheroics into the day job with 'The Fastest Man Alive'. Even if the magic word is more Johnny Quick...)

I've not really read much Flash, tbh - people have raved about the Waid run but, like most Waid, I find it to be OK but not something of which I feel compelled to read more.
Although I do have all but one of the issues from when he took a break and Morrison and Millar took over. Chap I know reckons that Flash vs Sonic The Hedgehog For The Fate Of The Earth is the best story in the history of comics, and I don't think he's that far wrong.

Your libel suit from Mc Carlos is in the post...

It puzzles me that their Flash has never been traded; it's not all great, but the arc where he has to outrun The Black Flash ie DEATH is also awesome.

Upstairs at the Garage indeed, w/General Khaki.

That Venue gig wasn't the prior Shot By Both Sides with Lux, was it? I feel sure that was more recent.
