Last night I felt appreciably sloshed and in need of no further booze, thank you, after only three CCPs. If I've permanently returned to teenage levels of cider-tolerance, then my budgeting worries could be at an end!
The Low Edges are not a million miles from the current post-punk boom, but atypically they're at their best when
liquid_city (who, confusingly, looks not the least bit like Jeremy Clarkson) straps on an acoustic and their sound gets more layered, in such a way that it's almost easier to reference producers (Spector, Hannett) than bands. That said, I was also very impressed by mojo-loss anthem 'The Incredible Shrinking Man'. Definitely one to watch, especially now they're bringing
drummygirl on board.
Next up are Temple. They are the sort of band where it is possible to forget what they sound like even while they're playing. They are also the sort of support band who believe that turning up the volume is the way to make people pay attention. Hopefully they are also the sort of band that you see only once before they disappear without trace.
Headliners GEN!RAL!KHA!KI! remain one of the few bands where 'tight' is an active compliment rather than simply reaching for something to say. They don't really have much in common with Dexy(')s except for reminding us that a disciplined band can also be an exciting one. And I still can't see why the press &c haven't picked up on them yet because while there are many bands I like doing the small-scale rounds at present, I don't think there are any others who would so obviously appeal to NME-reading elements of the Yoof.
anw's round-up of forthcoming USTV reports that "Alyson Hannigan co-stars in a relationships sitcom with Doogie Howser. The series is framed as a flashback, hence the title, How I Met Your Mother. Hannigan does not play your mother."
The Vichy Government play twice this weekend, at the Bull & Gate on Saturday and at Nambucca on Sunday. It is likely that I shall only be attending the latter, which is free and at which Vichy are on at 6, but I would recommend either to those at a loose end.
Oh, and I've come up with a working theory as to the conflicting accounts of humanity's level of time technology in the 51st century Whoniverse, if anyone cares.

Date: 2005-06-17 11:23 am (UTC)It's odd, I normally prefer singers who are unimpeded by instruments but last night those were the songs which seemed to me to have the most individual Low Edges-ness.
