Mmmm, all the mash in the world, and a fine selection of sausages to boot.

I don't think I've seen a full episode of Jeeves and Wooster since it was first screened - which, I was shocked to realise, was in 1991. It doesn't seem that long simply because the show was what started me reading Wodehouse, and whenever I do, I always picture Jeeves and Bertie as Fry and Laurie*. Hell, it didn't just start me on Wodehouse, it started me on that whole era, on dreams of Fitzgerald and flappers. As such, it's good to see that it still holds up. And not just through fond nostalgia, or through having enough good bits that one can overlook the glaring flaws a la early Who - this would still pass muster on primetime today.

[livejournal.com profile] drasticsturgeon, [livejournal.com profile] kiss_me_quick: do you have Departure albums yet? Some more have arrived. One might almost suspect label desperation as they realise they've left it too long and let the Bloc KaiserHeads steal that 'almost Franz' buzz.

In this picture:

it looks to me very much as though Blair is doing a 'Do you want a piece of me? Do ya?' I very much hope somebody took him up on that.

Banning protests within half a mile of Parliament *is* horribly illiberal - but then, gibbering Parliament Square protester Brian Haw *is* a waste of perfectly good amino acids, meaning I'm not as outraged by this as I should be.

*How anyone dealt with those dreadful old buffers in the previous adaptation, I doubt I'll ever understand.

The above-named get first refusal, after their vocal protests at missing out last time. If they're sorted, or yet more arrive, you're next on the list.

i simply don't see how people protesting on parliament square interferes with the mps doing their jobs. though maybe i only used to pass it on quiet days.

they can get a bit noisy and disrupt yer average joe civil servant from being able to concentrate on, say, writing questions for PM question time. or so a grumpy civil servant once told me :)

Even walking through the square occasionally, his megaphone'd gibberish tends to get right on my nerves. If you actually work there it could get very trying.

but who will i point at laugh at on my morning journeys to work? the parliament square nutters excercising always elicits a smirk.

This being London, I am sure other targets for mockery will soon present themselves.

I think his movements in general support Grant Morrison's theory that he's a spastic corpse being remote-controlled by a psychic.

I thought the protests were *meant* to be an eyesore. Isn't that the whole point? Making MPs feel uncomfortable about the decisions they're making so much so that they're unable to get on with their work? I hate all MPs now and want them to die.

The thing is, his incoherent rants are just as distracting for the most milksop anti-war MP as they are for the rabid hawks.

Yes, but as stated above, there are already two claimants with first refusal - and neither has yet responded.

Before I lost all patience with protests, the one I thought came closest to the ideal was the first Cambridge Reclaim The Streets I attended, precisely because they were so fluffy. It seemed, whether consciously or not, to have taken onboard the situationist objections to confrontational protests - instead they were trying to throw a party to which, eventually, everybody would hopefully turn up. Even the police were joining in the general sense of camaraderie - not least because lots of them had been bussed in and were consequently on double time.
By the next year, they were going for maximum disruption, being pointlessly rude to the police, and generally accomplishing sod all in a slightly snotty manner.

Aww Jeeves and Wooster is ace, hurrah! I recently discovered it's on Saturdays on ITV2 whilst absent mindedly channel hopping - a welcome break from the realityteeveewank it usually plays. Marv.
