Spent a particularly dispiriting afternoon yesterday putting in listings for whole swarms of clubs of the sort which makes the likely presence of Celebrity Love Island alumni a selling point, but forgets to tell you their music policy. Heaved myself out of the doldrums by heading for Poptimism, which in spite of certain venue and attendance...issues this month was still a hundred times the club they'll ever be. Because the music, and not an appearance in Heat or Hello, is its raison d'etre. Because those present are characters, not 'personalities'. And because frankly, at the most basic level, I very much doubt any of those places ever play Aztec Camera or Johnny Boy.

If I'm not drinking then I tend to realise when I'm getting a bit tired, and go home (normally I'd mistake it for needing another drink). I was back in time for Newsnight but opted for Radio 3 instead. As you may know, this has been their We're Well Gay For Beethoven week* in which they're airing his complete works, and really, Ludwig Van has more to tell me even than Jeremy. Being informed about the world gets tired when the world does so little to deserve one's attention.

OMD have now been referenced in two successive Doctor Who books, and by synthpop standards they're not even particulary gay. Are these deviants trying to corrupt Who with a straight agenda? I'm aghast!
(Though not as much so as I was at the Eighth Doctor's "I remembers saying to Dickens..." CONTINUITY GEEK CIRCUITS MELTDOWN)

I made it from work to Poptimism on foot (the sky spent two hours threatening downpour, but the threat was as empty as an ultimatum to North Korea). I was delighted to see that those vile Back The Bid flags had been removed from the Mall and replaced with the union flag - but as I killed a little time in the National Portrait Gallery, I noticed that they'd scrawled that ghastly logo on the walls of the entrance hall there instead! But hey, why stop there, you vandals? Why not go round 500 years' worth of portraits sticking it on them too, in the form of speech bubbles? Ghastly. Utterly ghastly.

*Possibly not its actual title.

One day I'll actually go to Poptimism, should really be supporting places that put a bit of thought into their playlists. Being on the day before I get paid is always going to cause problems though.

The next Doctor will end up hanging out the back of a street urchin at this rate.

If it even takes that long, with Captain Jack around...

I'm fairly confident that you would indeed like Poptimism.

Oh, and playlist-wise - have you played 'Thames Valley Leather Club' at LYE yet?

Don't think so, I've played Dreams Of Leaving at least. It'll be getting played next month anyway.

Ah yes, Fridays would be super.

The problem is, Fridays are more likely to clash with stuff; I used to be a regular at How Does It Feel, say, but have barely been since it moved from Thursday.

yeah i know, plus it kind of puts a bit more pressure on you to get people in and increases the chances that RANDOMS might come or something terrible like that.

still, worth giving it a go eh? HDIF does still seem to be doing OK though ;)

Yes, it may be getting the numbers but I don't go anymore! And frankly, which is the key priority, eh?

They'll beat you to it, I'm sure. When I rule the world, anyone involved in this idiotic waste of money and dignity is going to find themselves dangling from a London landmark. Now *that's* how to make this city even greater.

it's when someone slaps a 'back the bid' sticker on your dangling london landmark that action must be taken.

Very well - then you, and your fellow sportists, can foot the fvcking bill. And pay me compensation for the crowds of peons it will draw to clog our streets and transport network and otherwise impede my life.

No, you can sit in front of your TV and watch every Sci-Fi series ever made and read every graphic novel/comic until it's all over. You undesirables need to be shifted.

If you're suggesting that I'd watch Star Trek then you really have crossed the line. Ah well, hopefully if it does come here then al Qaida will come with it. We've been told it's only a matter of time until London is hit - if they take out an Olympic stadium then at least none of the casualties will matter.

Oh come on, even I have watched the occasional Star Trek. (original series, obv. none of that Deep Space 9 crap)

A couple of the episodes written by proper horror and SF types were just about watchable, but even those I would never watch again.

It's obvious - the Doctor is like Dr Manhattan. The Time Lords, living outside Time as they do, are conscious of all their past and future acts as one whole (which is why Doctor 3 could refer to Doctor 4 as 'all teeth and curls' without ever meeting him).
However, in order to live normal lives and avoid time paradoxes, they have conditioned themselves to develop temporary amnesia about their future up to two weeks ahead, as well as any past experiences that take place in their current future. So if any two doctors meet, they can't give each other useful information about the situation they find themselves in.
This is why the Doctor could remember that he was going to meet Dickens in the future, up until about two weeks before actually meeting him.
See? Very simple.

That's most ingenious! Although I already came up with two rather simpler options:
1) Each Doctor is, to some extent, a different individual, so 9 could be excited about the first time *he* meets Dickens. Who knows, perhaps 9 is a bigger fan of his work than 8 ever was?
2) The Doctor's memory has been messed around with an awful lot (I think the figure of 34 major alterations was mentioned in Halflife), and each regeneration further rearranges what's remembered (witness the Doctors' varying skills at eg TARDIS control). So perhaps a minor meeting could simply be forgotten.

If I had several incarnations' worth of memories then I'd forget stuff from time to time as well. I can barely remember what day it is anyway.

Perhaps one Doctor is better at remembering stuff than another?

From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
Definitely - the First could barely remember his lines!

And yes, Time Lords have better memories than humans, but they're certainly not flawless and they do have an awful lot to remember. Indeed, I think there was a bit in Pyramids where the Doctor mentions that he'd have remembered something sooner were he younger...

>Definitely - the First could barely remember his lines!

Yet his three older selves defer to him in THE FIVE DOCTORS. The doctor is a mental clearly.

From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
Like that's the only evidence of his being mental!

"Can I do it? Have I the right to destroy the Daleks?"

YES. You'll do it later anyway, why not take the easy route now?

I think "Why bother? The b@stards always pop up again somewhere anyway." would've been more appropriate. If you haven't learnt that after eleven years of being shot at by them you never will.

Dickens Schmickens. Do any of the Doctors remember the time they met cultural icons like Roy Castle and Bernard Cribbins?

I'd also like to add that, in general, Radio 3 is ace. It's a Class A drug to Classic FM's alcopop. But I'll admit that a whole week of wall-to-wall Beethoven is a bit hard to digest.

We would have been headed in the same direction, then. At the very least that would mean they'd reversed them since I was last up there, and I'm fairly sure the backs were union too - though thinking about it, I'm not sure I ever actually looked at the backs of any of them...
