Sometimes, watching old film footage, you see faces that you could have seen in the street earlier, but often there are faces which you realise don't look like faces you see anymore. Except, of course, that every now and then you do see such a face, and realise what an anomaly is. There's a moment of this in Sin City, when Dwight says that Marv isn't crazy, he's just living in the wrong time. And yesterday, I saw a man with a seventies face. Not seventies clothes, or seventies hair - just a face which looked like it belonged in a bad sex comedy (if that's not tautologous).

Spent yesterday evening in a strange but pleasant pub; there seemed to have been a community there once from which only this pub (and the church into whose graveyard its beer garden bled) had escaped the Luftwaffe and the town planners. Granted, we did end up re-enacting Shaun of the Dead except with morris dancers instead of zombies, but on the whole it was just what you want from a pub - oldmannish, but not unwelcoming. On the Tube home, I was discussing this with [livejournal.com profile] dr_shatterhand, who contrasted it to Wetherspoon's - which, he noted, often lapsed from being cheep and cheerful, into making you feel that you were drinking with murderers.
A few stops later, at H&I, a drunken woman leaving the train tapped me on the shoulder and mumbled forcefully that Wetherspoon's drinkers "aren't murderers, we just don't like [adjective] cvnts like youse two".
[Poll #509448]

The new Gorillaz album features appearances by Simon 'The Verve' Tong, Neneh Cherry, De La Soul, Ike Turner, Roots Manuva, Martina Topley-Bird, Shaun Ryder and DENNIS BLOODY HOPPER. There is no mention on the outside of the case of any of their presences, which impresses me even more.

Another crack in the wall between fact and fiction as a virtual item ends two real lives.

edit: Forgot to plug Poptimism at the Polar Bear tonight. Come dance to pop music and drink cheap booze! Not that I shall be doing the latter, for I am straight-edging it.

"My son was only 26 when he died. He was sleeping when Qiu broke into his home. He was barely able to put his pants on before Qiu stabbed him," said his father, Zhu Huimin."

Well putting my pants on would be the first thing I did if someone was trying to stab me!!

That makes me feel really uncomfortable though... :/

I suppose it's a reflex, isn't it - most things when one is not yet quite awake are.

Oh, and I reckon 'smart-arse' is just the sort of thing pikeys would accuse us of - but I don't think that's what she said.

To be fair you are a smart arse. You should of asked her what she called you. And then smashed her face in with a fvcking brick. I bought a kinder egg today, they are really rubbish.

We were too flabbergasted to respond at first! The thing is, we weren't even being particularly obnoxious, by our standards.
I enjoyed my last two kinder eggs, at [livejournal.com profile] missfrancesca's, but then I had been drinking heavily at the time.

I got a daffy duck, that is rubbish. I wanted something to put together so I could feel I had achieved something.

Yeah, I love Loony Tunes but those toys are a bit rub. The swashbuckling Scottish was good, though.

what pub is this?

From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
I actually can't recall its name, since it was described at all times simply as 'the skinny pub' (which makes sense if you see it). It's in that warren of streets behind Waterloo.

Sinner/Winner man was rude to me the other day!
I walked past and smiled at him, and he looked at me and megaphoned "ALL YOU YOUNG PEOPLE LOOKING MISERABLE BECAUSE YOU DON'T HAVE JESUS IN YOUR LIVES" etc

Anyway, I am being stalked by that little protegé/copycat one, whom I have named JEESUS CHRYSE man (does that one have a name). He is somehow a pathetic version of Sinner/Winner who generally seems a bit scared to use his megaphone.

Ooooh, is he the rather lacklustre one who's often found at Victoria?

Date: 2005-06-09 10:30 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] ex-dumbgenius.livejournal.com
He tends to stalk me up the Finchley Road as far as Golders Green, and sometimes Oxford Street if Sinner/Winner man is not around. Don't know about Victoria... anyway, he says Jesus Christ a lot in a very impedimented way, which makes him quite frightening. Very lacklustre, though, yes.

Ooooh, I'm not sure I've seen him. There should be an I Spy book of them!

The best (meaning worst) I ever saw was the one with the big board up above his head on which he had magnetic letters arranged to spell out homophobic assholism. I always hoped that he'd one day stand near enough to an upper window that someone could rearrange his board to read 'TAKE ME NOW, BIG BOYS, AND TAKE ME ROUGH' or similar.

It's not detox per se, rather a combination of frugality with appalled memories of my state by the end of the last two Poptimisms.

Ike Turner?!

I know what you mean about the seventies face thing - reminds me of that bit in Watchmen where Hollis Mason's autobiography talks about the same thing.
Except I'm not allowed to talk about comics any more given the comments on my own journal...

He plays piano on one track.

The beauty of my portmanteau posts is that there's normally something for everyone - when people have no idea what a given paragraph is on about, they can just move to the next!

Yeah, I used to try those kind of posts too, but with my net access having been curtailed, I started the hit-and-run type...
Be interesting to hear how he is on piano now - I love his piano playing from the 50s, but he was pretty much exclusively on guitar from when he met Tina...

Yes, I heard about that...I suspect we'll still get one at some point, but at least the danger has subsided for now.

And hard to say how many syllables the word is *meant* to have, given her slurring - but so far I reckon [livejournal.com profile] carsmilesteve's 'styooodent' is probably the best bet.
