After spending the morning feeling like I'd been punched in the stomach, I've been thinking about this...let's assume they do regenerate the Doctor every series. Is that really so bad? So next we get Tennant, the 11th is Nighy, the 12th is Grant, and you've got room for one more, maybe Sheen or Morrissey...that's five 13-episode series plus a few specials, which is as much as an HBO series usually gets. And TV simply isn't made the same way it used to be. Do we really want Doctor Who to run forever? It did that back when, but at the cost of cheap effects, filler scripts, rushed recordings...wouldn't it be wonderful to see how the story ends? I know they'd never go with the ending I'd do, but what the Hell, the final battle between good and evil is a pretty good TV idea too. We get to see a new Who, with a lower ratio of duds than the old series, and itself as long as many of the modern classics.

In news related only by sounding science fictional: "He can now control everyday objects by thought alone" - that's the sort of news I like to read.

I'm unimpressed. Changing the volume on the TV is all very well but I want something which means I can think women into bed with me, without all that rubbish seduction malarkey.

Could they not squeeze at least one extra regeneration in by ending a series with the Doctor waking up going "it was all a dream..."?

Also, surely the Who concept would allow for a parallel universe premise to occur, worlds wherein some Doctors are just starting.

I see 'Neil' wherever I see 'Tennant'.

They could , but then I would have to hunt them down and kill them.

There have been mentions of parallel universe Doctors, such as Merlin in Battlefield - but too much messing with parallels tends to cause brain meltdown in everyone but the SF hardc0re.

Consensus is that there's going to be a Saturnalia Special, in which they can sort that out.

Should Buffy have run for 26 years, then?

We just don't work that way anymore. And a series which is All Killer No Filler and ends with The End *is* fun!

Apparently there are death threats being posted on some Who fansites over Eccleston's decision. Bl**dy typical. Considering how swiftly the BBC have move onto Tennant, I think this must have been on the cards for a while.

I think we're all gutted by this news and, I think, a bit betrayed by a man who took on the biggest role on British television, knowing everything that it entailed, and has now bottled it and effectively done a runner. I'm disappointed and not a little disgusted. The edge has been taken right off the new series and my commiserations go out to RTD, Phil Collinson, Jane Tranter, Lorraine Heggessey, Billie Piper and everyone else who's worked their butts off to make this show work and turn it into a hit. CE has let them and us down. Doctor Who may not recover from this one...

Surely it's just a media assumption because of the Russell T Davies connection? I've heard him play Benedick amongst other things and he has a tendency to be a bit cheeky. He was also reading Robert Louis Stevenson's biog on Radio 4 all last week and I think he's too light-handed.

And also I can hear the pre-written Radio 1 Newsbeat soundbites now, 'Death threats for the Doctor'...the more I hear, the more cynical I am about the whole story breaking. They've saturated every other form of publicity and had reviews coming out of their ears - this is all they have left to do..

The two who aren't Hawking do sport, right?

They could appear, having their body parts removed that they might be made into Cybermen. Except that to save on the special effects budget, the surgery would be real but the cyborg parts wouldn't.
