Spoiler: You will die alone
Feb. 21st, 2005 10:44 amRIP, Spider Jerusalem Hunter S Thompson. What a b1tch of a way to start the week.
Am currently in that awkward phase of working out where to put everything on the new desk for minimum discomfort. Today looks likely to be trying. So let's retreat into those happy remembered days of the weekend...
Friday: my first Fan Club at its new home, the Purple Turtle. I had thought that I might somehow miss the Verge but frankly, this beats it on every count bar my ineluctable nostalgia. In keeping with tradition, the two support bands are atrocious (if this is the same Mynx who did 'Hello Kitty' in 2000, they've completely lost the plot since). But luxembourg salvage proceedings effortlessly, and then the records...oh, the records! I've missed you, Fan Club. Why did we ever stop seeing each other? Is my poledancing the problem?
Saturday:
papamoomin's birthday drinks in the Ben Crouch. Since he last slept he has apparently had two bottles of wine, half a bottle of vodka and eight pints. He doesn't even seem tipsy. This is either impressive or terrifying, I can't quite decide. The Ben Crouch's loos no longer have spooky sound effects, presumably because Tate Modern are using the same tapes.
Then on to an evening of Star Wars-related DVDage. I am too softcore even to reach the main feature, but see enough to decide that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is my new hero, and that no matter how much of a geek I may be, people who queue outside Attack of the Clones will always be worse.
Sunday:
vivid_blue invites me for lunch. Is lunch customarily an eight-hour slot? I'm glad this one was. We listen to a sampler of the Tears album. As reformations for the money go, it's somewhat better than the current Duran Duran album but really nothing special. Brett's lyrics are still Brett's lyrics, and I don't mean that in a good way.

Date: 2005-02-21 10:54 am (UTC)in a bizarre fan club twist, the first support band, swimmer one, were actually quite lovely - but hardly anyone saw them! the other two were bobbins though, 'tis true...

Date: 2005-02-21 10:56 am (UTC)That does make sense, actually - the usual pattern was Good Band - Debacle - Good Band. But the name Swimmer One was hardly promising...

Date: 2005-02-21 11:12 am (UTC)check them out i guess: http://www.swimmerone.co.uk/
you may be horrified, i dunno! Alex lux is frothing over them in a way quite unbefiiting of a pop icon, either way!

(At the time of HK the group consisted of two spunky teenage girls, obviously, if that helps solve the puzzle).

Date: 2005-02-21 11:33 am (UTC)And 8 hours? That is nothing when you have good food/music/alcohol/company... It's what weekend afternoons are made for!

Date: 2005-02-21 11:35 am (UTC)Because it actually did get quite rubbish? Friday night was definitely a return to form, record-wise (though I left shortly after midnight - it could have gone downhill after then for all I know). It's odd that so many clubs are now in the Purple Turtle. I did quite like The Verge, though I always seemed to get dodgy coke (a-cola) there.

Date: 2005-02-21 11:55 am (UTC)Oh yes. There was much poledancing that time.
