RIP, Spider Jerusalem Hunter S Thompson. What a b1tch of a way to start the week.
Am currently in that awkward phase of working out where to put everything on the new desk for minimum discomfort. Today looks likely to be trying. So let's retreat into those happy remembered days of the weekend...

Friday: my first Fan Club at its new home, the Purple Turtle. I had thought that I might somehow miss the Verge but frankly, this beats it on every count bar my ineluctable nostalgia. In keeping with tradition, the two support bands are atrocious (if this is the same Mynx who did 'Hello Kitty' in 2000, they've completely lost the plot since). But luxembourg salvage proceedings effortlessly, and then the records...oh, the records! I've missed you, Fan Club. Why did we ever stop seeing each other? Is my poledancing the problem?

Saturday: [livejournal.com profile] papamoomin's birthday drinks in the Ben Crouch. Since he last slept he has apparently had two bottles of wine, half a bottle of vodka and eight pints. He doesn't even seem tipsy. This is either impressive or terrifying, I can't quite decide. The Ben Crouch's loos no longer have spooky sound effects, presumably because Tate Modern are using the same tapes.
Then on to an evening of Star Wars-related DVDage. I am too softcore even to reach the main feature, but see enough to decide that Triumph the Insult Comic Dog is my new hero, and that no matter how much of a geek I may be, people who queue outside Attack of the Clones will always be worse.

Sunday: [livejournal.com profile] vivid_blue invites me for lunch. Is lunch customarily an eight-hour slot? I'm glad this one was. We listen to a sampler of the Tears album. As reformations for the money go, it's somewhat better than the current Duran Duran album but really nothing special. Brett's lyrics are still Brett's lyrics, and I don't mean that in a good way.

you are the only other person i know who is correct about the Tears. good man!
in a bizarre fan club twist, the first support band, swimmer one, were actually quite lovely - but hardly anyone saw them! the other two were bobbins though, 'tis true...

Argh did you see that terrible piece on her in the Guide this week? My rage became crisp.

Yes, like the recent Rammstein piece in the same slot I was just left wondering why exactly this article existed. It appeared to be an unhappy combination of primer for Martians, and opinion piece.

Who's the tit that occupies that page anyway? I can't recall him being on the f**king money EVER. Which annoys me because I'm OFTEN on the money and if you wanted ME to write as many words on Kate Bush as that I would have done the best job ever.

*thinks of my idea of a great Kate Bush review*

Oh.

It rotates. Some of them, like Mueller and Robinson, are OK. Others are useless.

Hurrah for my being correct (as ever).

That does make sense, actually - the usual pattern was Good Band - Debacle - Good Band. But the name Swimmer One was hardly promising...

kind of like early pop PSB crossed with a very sardonic REM, but much less awkward than that sounds.
check them out i guess: http://www.swimmerone.co.uk/
you may be horrified, i dunno! Alex lux is frothing over them in a way quite unbefiiting of a pop icon, either way!

Swimmer 1

It's a John Foxx instrumental that only surfaced on the resiisue of Metamatic...

John Foxx: pretty good, but I've never heard anything of his which equalled 'Dancing With Tears In My Eyes'.

i missed all t'bands due to being waaaay wasted from the get go. i think we watched a bit of a band that gave us teh fear so we left.

OK, that makes sense.

I appreciate the Mondayness, I'm having to type everything twice while I get my limbs accustomed to the new desk. It curves.

I'd be amazed if was the old Mynx...I believe they disappeared into total oblivion after their second single (A Cure cover version, I think), never materialised.

But you never know.

(At the time of HK the group consisted of two spunky teenage girls, obviously, if that helps solve the puzzle).

As I said to [livejournal.com profile] culteredgoat Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas is one of my favourite books. He'll be sorely missed...

And 8 hours? That is nothing when you have good food/music/alcohol/company... It's what weekend afternoons are made for!

Why did we ever stop seeing each other? Is my poledancing the problem?

Because it actually did get quite rubbish? Friday night was definitely a return to form, record-wise (though I left shortly after midnight - it could have gone downhill after then for all I know). It's odd that so many clubs are now in the Purple Turtle. I did quite like The Verge, though I always seemed to get dodgy coke (a-cola) there.

It carried on being ace pretty much to the end.
You may well be right about a previous drop-off; it's possible I'm only remembering the good stuff.

From: [identity profile] kiss-me-quick.livejournal.com
I have memories of at least two occasions where I was sat at a table where we were all looking miserable and bored stiff because the music was so bad. I also remember the time where it was ace and we took over the stage.

From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
Yeah, now you say that it comes back...

The time on stage - I poledanced then too, didn't I? Clearly my poledancing is the secret of great Fan Clubs!

I meant what I said about the singing earlier in the evening though - I was still soberish I think...

It's horrible that Hunter S Thompson is dead :(

But 8 hour lunches are good, yes.
And hello, yes, I'm back online this week.

How can you be bored and Hunter S. Thompson.

You heard a proper sampler of The Tears album *ahem* sorry I was getting a little excited there. Have you got a copy? I can barely wait for that album to come out even if you're not convinced. Add me and i'll add you back :)

I did, but not only is it not mine, it was watermarked and had the owner's name on it, such that if it got copied she would be dismembered by ocelots or similar.

Dismemberment by ocelot... an interesting method of torture no doubt concocted by the evil minions working for Independiente. I shall have to show more patience.

With hindsight, it wasn't just the wine - the Holiday Special really was soul-witheringly bad.
