Last night: lasagne (yum) and red wine (also yum) in the wilderlands of New Cross chez [livejournal.com profile] violentbec. I don't mind the lesbian knitters' mutterings re the evil of my gender, but once they get into the knitting technicalities I always begin to fear that they are talking in code. [livejournal.com profile] insecuregoddess is less of an alkie than the rest of us, so gets most comprehensively wasted, and has to be escorted back to North London. This is more challenging than you might think.
Me: Pippa, this is the street where they had the heavy police presence earlier, so maybe you could stop shouting..?
[livejournal.com profile] insecuregoddess: HELLO, HEAVY POLICE PRESENCE!
[livejournal.com profile] atommickbrane sensibly pulls up her hood and walks far enough ahead to maintain deniability.

It annoys me that Charles and Camilla are to have a civil wedding. After all, as became clear when I tried to explain the Church of England to Bec last night, the only reason the Church of England exists is to remarry royalty; it's not like they exactly have a passionately-held theological raison d'etre.

The Richard Morgan did arrive yesterday after all. No one has had their head melted yet, but I am less than ten pages in, and I don't think I'll have long to wait.

As much as I am looking forward to flailing around like a big gay goth at B Movie tonight, and shaking my alleged booty at Soul Mole tomorrow, I am slightly wondering when I'll fit any sleep into the weekend.

Gah! The former. I mean, they originally had Catholics-who-didn't-want-to-cause-a-fuss in the same church as Puritans. Now, they have both of the above, plus a fair few people who don't actually believe in their supposed deity!

Don't bother. You'd have a more numinous experience going to a decent supermarket.

In response to which subtlety, I can only say HAPPY BIRTHDAY!

(Well, either that or make a cheap innuendo about activating glands, but that would really be reaching)

shouldn't charles be able to have a civil wedding if he wants to?

Does anyone honestly believe that he has chosen a civil wedding for reasons of personal preference rather than political expediency?

Even if he doesn't want a religious wedding, he should just wait 'til his ma dies and then ditch all the religious stuff from the CofE ceremony BECAUSE HE CAN.

no

he should do what he wants

(and i can belive he'd choose a personal press free civil wedding over the stupid pomp and circumstance of another charles and diana wedding - can't you)

They're being blessed after the service, in the private chapel, by the Archbishop of Canterbury.
If you have the highest ordained member of the church in the house anyway, you might as well get him to do the bloody service.

"i can belive he'd choose a personal press free civil wedding over the stupid pomp and circumstance of another charles and diana wedding"

Yes, so can I. However, what difference in levels of pomp and press is there between a private civil ceremony, and a private religious ceremony?
Have his religious beliefs changed significantly in the past 20 years?

he's going to be bludy king*! it's all about POMP, stuff what he wants, i want BIG, i want 100s of visiting dignitaries and a DIMBLEBY, if not TWO. if he's going to waste my tax money, i want SPECTACLE for flips sake.

also yes, he is almost in charge of CofE and thus should use it as HIS PLAYTHING, it's why henry viii set it up anyway...

There are other reasons for the Church of England than remarrying royalty. There's also the need to provide employment for people who want to be ministers of religion, but don't believe in God, and similarly to provide opportunities for collective worship for upper middle class atheists.

And of course the need to provide employment for people who want to be ministers but would rather have sex with adult females, as opposed to children, and so would never fit in with the Catholics.
