So for various reasons [livejournal.com profile] violentbec did a poll as to which is better: the entire recorded output of the Beatles, or 'We Built This City On Rock'n'Roll' by Starship. In a rare instance of democracy working, Starship won. The other question which had cropped up in the same discussion, though, was not polled. So:

[Poll #420749]

Apropos of none of which:
"Mayor of London Ken Livingstone has called for Westminster City council to reconsider implementing its directive removing rainbow flags from business premises in Soho. The Mayor responded to representations from the lesbian and gay community about Westminster’s move.
Under section 224 of the Town and Country Planning Act 1990, businesses that display the flag face possible prosecution as displaying the flags is viewed as advertising."

I wonder if they'll take similar action over all those Union Jacks within their bailiwick? After all, they're clearly advertising Britain!
Tossers.

I disagree, but can sympathise; for all that I hate them, there are odd songs which annoy me more. Anything by the Vengaboys, for instance.

Wrong, wrong, wrong.

I love the Beatles output up to 1965, but then their hippy phase does count for a trillion minus points.

If their German phase actually sounds like the Afghan Whigs on the Backbeat soundtrack/as good as they looked back then, then they were ace at that point.
All subsequent points suck. And that early phase ain't recorded, afaik.

I liked them when sid vicious was their killer enforcer, he'd destroy whoever they were feuding with, typically with a power bomb, then flair would do a knee drop from the second rope which amazingly split lots of people open if i remember correctly. Sid never had that much talent but his power move offence worked very well and his time in the horsemen & his feud with hogan culminating in the wrestlemania 8 main event entertained me greatly.

The National Flag is a flag, not an advertisement. Nothing else is thus privileged. The question is when they are going to prosecute and remove all those horrible EU flags.

Yes, but were I in a bar with Schedule 2 of the Town and Country Planning act I would ask it the same question and spit in its face. I believe Ken's actual words were 'Tell Westminster to stop being so ridiculous'

Oh yes, and where does it all end eh? It's political correctness gone mad. Soon people will be painting the streets rainbow, and hanging giant pictures of Chairman Mao out of their window. Is that what you want? 'cos that's what'll happen.

Once a national flag is placed upon any commercial item, it can be convincingly argued that the flag is no longer just a flag but an advertisement for a distinct nationality, ethos, accent, character and lifestyle. You can have your Guess? jeans or your Brit Brand. Guess what? Our nationalities are marketable commodities now. Don't like it? FCUK you.

The Beatles early stuff is OK, nice pop, fairly interesting melodies (more interesting than 90% of indie band melodies) - but overall they're unextraordinary (and their later stuff is just pompous tosh).

though I do often hear myself say "I hate the Beatles" - what I mean is that, I hate what they represent (rock classicism).

Yeah, were they just another sixties beat combo like the Animals, I'd probably like a couple of their songs. But as is, they're a huge corpse blocking too much sunlight.

Mr. Sarll, do you know which particular gay is responsible for this? That's right...my own, personal, housemate gay has been in discussions with Ken's office about this and was interviewed for Teh Tegelraph and some lazy arsed bunch hack outfit called 'The Press Association' yesterday. Hurrah for my pet gay.
From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
Cool! He may also be interested to know that said press release went out, was recalled, and then came out again with no apparent differences.

I can't stand that song. Ticket To Ride is better.
