I had been warned that Baise-Moi wasn't very good, and indeed it wasn't - another in that ignoble line of films which show vast amounts of sechs but have to make it all deeply unsechsy in order that they be considered Art rather than P0rn (see also: Intimacy). However! Unlike many French films, which make their point and then carry on for another interminable hour, it is only 73 minutes long, and for that alone deserves commendation.

At one point I was obliged to pause it that I might make a doorstep cash handover to a New Labour aide. Foolishly, I neglected to photograph this - there goes my lucrative deal with the Mail.

And to celebrate the bounty of the LJfairy...

Maybe it was just that I saw the first on the big screen, or that I'd seen other films in the interim whose CGI raised the bar, but I thought the first was flawed and the second was basically terrible unless Doc Ock was onscreen.

I enjoy the Blade films, but I think of them more as horror/action than superheroics (I almost didn't include Hellboy on the same grounds). And Elektra's a ninja more than a super(anti)heroine.

I haven't seen about half of those, actually.

(Supergirl might genuinely have got my vote purely for the Peter Cook factor, actually.)

The one that annoyed me the most was X-Men, actually. I thought it was a decent enough film, competent in the right places and well-made. But it seemed so utterly formulaic and predictable to the point of laziness, didn't give you characters who you particulary cared for, and the convenient wait-for-the-sequel ending, just sucked, frankly.

From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
"It'll be different this time, Erik. They've evolved."
"Yes. Into us."

Right there I knew that they'd done those characters better than they'd ever been done. And yes, the plot was fairly formulaic but it was the formula reduced to its bare essentials and then turned up to 11.

And surely the second film is far more blatant in its sequel set-up?

The first Superman film is clearly the best superhero movie, as it's the only one that had all the elements in place - impeccable casting, an appropriate sense of awe and wonder that goes right back to the opening credits and score; and, as my mum always points out - how many other superhero films have a script by Mario Puzo?

Its own sequel runs it close, but I don't think it's quite as good - despite the fanboy wonder of the big ol' fight scene. X2 is superb, and despite being a bit long and trying to cram too much in (the Weapon X stuff shouldn't have been in there, they only did it because Wolverine was so popular in the first one), is easily the best of the current era, although I think Spidey 2 runs it close, I don't care what you say. Burton's two Batman films are fantastic. Hellboy is probably the most faithful comic book movie I've ever seen, although I think Sin City will probably rob it of that title. The Incredibles was wonderful, and Mystery Men criminally underrated. Which just leaves Hulk and Daredevil, both of which have their moments but aren't really worthy of consideration in such a poll.

Date: 2005-01-11 11:19 am (UTC)
From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
My main problem with Superman is that essentially, I don't like the character. It does well in spite of that, but some of the effects have dated rather.

Surely the Weapon X stuff is integral - Stryker's the main villain!

I will be amazed if Hulk or Daredevil get any votes, though I do quite like both.

As for the latter...I believe I expressed my feelings about that on here some months ago. But it still amazes me how many nerd-frotting side-references they managed to include (Fluoronic Man! Bane!) and yet *still* be so rubbish.
