Well, I finally found the edge of Youtube. Plenty of Associates vids (and I always forget that Billy M looked nearly as gorgeous as his voice), My Life Story promos even for the cancelled single, all manner of obscurities - but no Lodger. No, not the current Lodger, the nineties indie band who did 'I'm Leaving', and whose Pearl Lowe has been elevated to the lower echelons of tabloid royalty on account of a bit of Primrose Hill wife-swapping with the genuinely famous. Their second single, 'Always Round Here', had an absolutely beautiful, vaguely twenties video - I even owned it briefly, although it got lost on a friend's wardrobe when she moved house. And I thought, between the all-encompassing nature of the site and Pearl's subsequent sort-of-rise, that it would surely be on there. Alas, no.
Tried watching Party Animals, a transparent attempt at a Westminster This Life. Maybe this would seem more exciting if I didn't work ten minutes away and know the odd MP's minion? But as is it's pointlless. For hilariously accurate politics, I have The Thick Of It, for lightweight lifestyle fluff I have Entourage and Skins, and for serious political drama I have Battlestar Galactica. So I watched the end of the second series of that instead. Dear heavens. I'm not going to say much more than that, in part to avoid spoiling it for people who haven't got that far (or indeed, started the series) yet, and in part because I would just be trying to transcribe a series of anguished whimpers. The second loudest of these was occasioned by the question, asked on election eve regarding the electorate, "Are people really going to be that stupid? Are they really going to be that shortsighted?"
Speaking of sight - thin though they are, and as full of blood vessels as they may look, eyelids seem to be surprisingly less prone to bleeding and much quicker to heal than many other parts of the body. So stick that in your eye and smoke it, Fredric Wertham.
Thought while listening to Noel Coward: has anybody yet rewritten 'Don't Let's Be Beastly To The Germans' as 'Don't Let's Be Beastly To The Muslims', and if not, why not?
