You wouldn't like it here
Nov. 3rd, 2004 10:32 amYeah, I know it's not over 'til the provisional voters sing, but at present I am experiencing pretty much the least joy ever when I say (to the people who fancied Kerry's chances): told you so. Listening to the first five songs of Leonard Cohen's The Future over and over, and simply because of the tracklisting it's almost possible to believe that "Democracy is coming to the USA" supersedes 'Waiting For The Miracle' and "I have seen the future - it is murder". So I watch a little of Newsnight and they're all saying how we mustn't read too much into the little signs but hey, look at the little signs - Kerry's winning! And this morning people from the same organisations are explaining how Bush is winning and (this is the bit which *really* rankles) not even noting in an aside what rot they were talking eight hours ago.
And what makes this worse is that in spite of all those missing postal ballots, in spite of the electronic ballots which interpreted straight-ticket Democrat votes as including Bush-Cheney for President - this time it even seems to be an honest victory. The Republicans are winning the popular vote and both Houses of Congress too. Needless to say I exclude my American friends and their ilk from this but: FOR FVCK'S SAKE, AMERICA, WHAT ARE YOU THINKING?
Is anything happening on Friday, preferably involving fireworks? A repeat of 1812's White House bonfire would be ideal, but I'm open to other suggestions.
