The Return of Captain Invicible is one of those films where I'm not quite sure who or how it ever got made, but I'm profoundly glad it did. It's a deeply moving superhero spoof musical - now, that's the sort of idea at which I and several people I know leap, but you'd never expect a producer to agree. Alan Arkin (one of those actors who usually seems to play 'Police Chief' or similar) is excellent as the disillusioned superhero analogue and as his arch-nemesis Mr Midnight Christopher Lee is...Christopher Lee. Plus, it has that bloke who's in all Australian films ever. You know, Muriel's dad.
I was in bed by midnight last night, sober. On a Saturday. It's against the laws of gods and nature and no mistake.
The packing grows ever more draining. Currently saving the golden age Melody Makers, eviscerating the later issues and the NMEs for such workable organs as they possess. Later today - the loft. Gah.
And I've just read the X-Men's return to costumes. Joss Whedon and John Cassaday do all they can to sugar the pill, but it remains a deeply poisonous and utterly pointless pill.
