Is there anyone's car you won't get into?
May. 28th, 2004 10:23 amLast night on the Tube, I was so engrossed in my book that I went past my stop. I know I'm forever making unplanned nocturnal excursions to termini, but I don't think I've ever done that sober before. It was particularly unexpected given the book hadn't even seemed all that good until a few pages previously, when the narrative strands were suddenly pulled tight and the web became partially apparent.
The film version of Get Shorty is many things, but to me it's primarily a reminder that Tony Soprano looks better without a ponytail and beard.
When I lived in the wilderlands, I could never understand the objection to pirate radio stations. They'd find a gap on the dial, a rumour would go around, and everyone would tune in for an hour before realising there was a reason they'd not been able to get a real DJing job. Now, though, I live in London, where there are no gaps in the dial, and periodically find XFM overlaid with some godawful urban mess. I hope those responsible are caught and bummed to death with their own illicit transmitters.
I am ambivalent over the government's refusal to extradite Abu Hamza unless the death penalty is ruled out, but must reluctantly concur with them; while there's no debate whatsoever over his support for terrorists, those criteria would see the execution of Chrissie Hynde, with which no one's happy. That he materially supported them will never be totally provable as, for instance, Saddam's capital guilt is.
Apparently Norman Tebbit claimed on Today that "the Government's attitude is to do everything it can to promote bvggery". How have I managed to miss this campaign? Do the ads only run in the Mail and sports programmes, where they are felt to be more necessary?
