I love the Great American Novel. I love Underworld, The Corrections, Kavalier and Clay, Carter Beats the Devil and now Middlesex. I love books which aren't quite considered respectable but are clearly part of the same tradition, like The Witching Hour. I love the scope and the scale of them, the way they sprawl without sagging, the way they track remarkable people (sometimes famous, sometimes more quietly astonishing) across decades and in the process build up a map of a continent and a country, just as a cathode ray moving fast enough across a screen becomes a TV picture. I love the harmony of artistic weight and narrative impetus. I love the cinematic narrators. I even tend to find myself loving America itself.
