It would be wonderful to present last night's pub quiz as a tensely symbolic intellectual duel akin to those Cold War chess matches. It would also be a lie. There were some questions about popular music. [livejournal.com profile] missfrost, [livejournal.com profile] dickon_edwards, [livejournal.com profile] nickeii and myself knew some of the answers, and scribbled down random nonsense for the rest. [livejournal.com profile] moleintheground, [livejournal.com profile] oneofthose, [livejournal.com profile] rhodri and [livejournal.com profile] small_circle presumably knew more of the answers and scribbled less nonsense. We performed respectably if unimpressively, they came third.

I walked there under a new moon which had obviously missed the memo (the last one was Sunday and this was Tuesday, so at least they're trying) and at least a hundred stars. Whenever I hear the untrue truism about city-dwellers never seeing the stars, I'm mystified. I can only assume that as with the centuries of learned men who accepted the classical belief that flies have four legs, everyone's too in thrall to the received wisdom ever actually to look.
