When I heard the news about Marc Almond's hospitalisation yesterday, his Fantastic Star was already in my CD player. It's hard to get sentimental about Marc A's plight when it includes the following about Marc B:
"Bolan gone fat was not pleasant to see, but we loved him again when his car hit a tree [Sound effect: screeching brakes, crash]"
You could say, based on this, that he wouldn't want us to treat him with any more reverence than that shows Bolan. But judging by his rather unpleasant autobiography, I doubt he has that much self-awareness. Still, I hope all this trauma kicks his talent back into gear.

The Boyfriends were, by their own admission, not on top form last night but I still enjoyed their set. This is more than can be said for their support, a woman who wanted to be Gwen Stefani and thought she could cover Jeff Buckley; I believe the term is 'hubris'. We hoped that we might be able to spin [livejournal.com profile] claireybiscuit fast enough to create a vortex and suck them offstage, but no joy. The compere instructs us afterwards "Give it up for Aleesha Rome" - one word of that sentence should be replaced with a comma. But we like his idea after the Boyfriends; in order to show our appreciation we should buy ourselves a drink. This is a reward structure I like. [livejournal.com profile] queenairhead has earlier denied that she has in fact left her house; she now buys snakebite and black, proving conclusively that she's an impostor. [livejournal.com profile] missfrost is not on the hardcore painkillers I'd expected, but is still soldiering on through her injuries like a pocket-sized Christopher Reeve (except not dead). Also in attendance are [livejournal.com profile] fugitivemotel (tardy), [livejournal.com profile] dickon_edwards (looking particularly bohemian), [livejournal.com profile] my_name_is_anna (of course), and Charlie-whom-everyone-knows-somehow.

I make it home in time for another fine Sopranos. Many of the best bits of The Sopranos don't even *need* to be about the Mafia; last night's study of the power dynamics and long-lived resentments among cousins, for instance. But it's far more fun to see them played out around exhumation of murder victims than around some tiresome TV-verite office.
Terrifyingly, though, I found myself agreeing with Janice...

My main thought on this: That Neil Gaiman should be slightly more popular than lesbians surprises me. That he is eight times more popular than Alan Moore is just plain bizarre.

I already have 'gay drunken sleep dancing' and didn't want it to get too repetitive.

Really? Harsh! But even so, this one was also within your home district so it was pretty much a given.
