No female ape need pine or lesbianate
Jul. 23rd, 2004 11:28 amLast night I went to see The Village, the new film by M. Night Shyamalan, who has also been responsible for the widely-loved Sixth Sense, the divisive Unbreakable (which I loved) and the incoherent yet viscerally terrifying Signs. I am loath to say much about it, both because that would be beastly* and because we were specifically asked not to do so as we left. So I shall confine myself to this: I never thought William Hurt could act, but I've been shown the error of my ways. And if you like being scared out of your skin, you should definitely go see The Village as soon as it comes out, before you hear anything further about it.
Thence to the Hopeless W@nker (whose jukebox genuinely has been infected by a viral version of
kendall_lacey) for cool, crisp pints to soothe my film-frazzled nerves. The band are delayed and then delayed again, meaning only a hardcore of
insecuregoddess, LJ-less gadabout David Barnett and myself are there by the time the last godawful support band finally finish. I wouldn't go so far as Barnett, who thinks they're the worst support band he's ever seen; even when it comes to bands featuring Andrew Montgomery, I've seen him supported by Tiger. Nonetheless, he had a point. I believe they were called Psychid - avoid. But enough of that, we're here for Amityville, and it is clear at once that our patience will be rewarded. The flyer quotes someone calling them "absolutely fvcking incendiary" and whoever said that has a point. The one time I saw Geneva, Andrew had more star quality than anyone else in whose presence I have ever been except Neil Tennant; when I passed him before the show tonight that was absent, and I worried. Maybe he's just learnt to channel it because once he's on stage, I'm transfixed. His voice is as good as ever it was, his moves are probably better. And the strangest thing is, if anything he looks younger than he did in Geneva.
*I love the prevalence of the word 'cad' in today's headlines; it's a terribly underused word. I remember once describing a friend's awful ex thus, and she was slightly offended I didn't swear. I had to explain that as far as I'm concerned it's far more damning than most swear words.
