Last night I went to see The Village, the new film by M. Night Shyamalan, who has also been responsible for the widely-loved Sixth Sense, the divisive Unbreakable (which I loved) and the incoherent yet viscerally terrifying Signs. I am loath to say much about it, both because that would be beastly* and because we were specifically asked not to do so as we left. So I shall confine myself to this: I never thought William Hurt could act, but I've been shown the error of my ways. And if you like being scared out of your skin, you should definitely go see The Village as soon as it comes out, before you hear anything further about it.

Thence to the Hopeless W@nker (whose jukebox genuinely has been infected by a viral version of [livejournal.com profile] kendall_lacey) for cool, crisp pints to soothe my film-frazzled nerves. The band are delayed and then delayed again, meaning only a hardcore of [livejournal.com profile] insecuregoddess, LJ-less gadabout David Barnett and myself are there by the time the last godawful support band finally finish. I wouldn't go so far as Barnett, who thinks they're the worst support band he's ever seen; even when it comes to bands featuring Andrew Montgomery, I've seen him supported by Tiger. Nonetheless, he had a point. I believe they were called Psychid - avoid. But enough of that, we're here for Amityville, and it is clear at once that our patience will be rewarded. The flyer quotes someone calling them "absolutely fvcking incendiary" and whoever said that has a point. The one time I saw Geneva, Andrew had more star quality than anyone else in whose presence I have ever been except Neil Tennant; when I passed him before the show tonight that was absent, and I worried. Maybe he's just learnt to channel it because once he's on stage, I'm transfixed. His voice is as good as ever it was, his moves are probably better. And the strangest thing is, if anything he looks younger than he did in Geneva.

*I love the prevalence of the word 'cad' in today's headlines; it's a terribly underused word. I remember once describing a friend's awful ex thus, and she was slightly offended I didn't swear. I had to explain that as far as I'm concerned it's far more damning than most swear words.

I often get mocked for admitting that Signs scared the crap out of me. Glad I wasn't the only one!

While I was in the cinema, and for an hour afterwards, I was a jittering bag of terror. After that, I realised it made no sense whatsoever and recovered. The Village is equally shriek-inducing, but also makes sense.

I look forward to it, as I've liked all his films so far. When does it go on general release?

Good stuff. I shall await it with much glee, and suffer seeing with the rest of the peons in Wood Green.

Glad it was good, the band - we definitely need to find somewhere new to drink though.

I don't know if I've been there. We'll have to try it out. Perhaps...next week. Or NOW! Race you!

Hmm. Maybe I did and don't remember. But I don't think I've ever blacked out entire nights...

I mourn the loss of such words as 'cad' from the common parlance. I vote that we resurect 'bounder' as well. Have at thee!

There should be more fencing, definitely. Especially since I'm one of the only people I know who can actually fence.

After watching that awful bookish family forcing their children to fence on Wife Swap the other day, I have taken against it.

hey! the ape poem from the metro!
'twas something special, wasn't it?!

I was wondering when someone would pick up on that!
Yes, the whole story ruled (I love Churchill) but the poem was especially fine. I intend to use the word "lesbianate" as often as possible from here on in, and am fortunate that knowing the people I do will make that so easy.

i didn't get to read the story - only the poem over a shoulder. the chances of grabbing a metro in kentish town at 9:10 are remote to say the least! what was the gist?

There were worries about the population levels of the Gibraltar apes; Churchill took an interest because it is said that (a little like the ravens in the Tower) if the apes die out, Britain loses Gibraltar.

Neither poem was actually by Churchill, alas.

no, no! i thought the poem was written in reponse to a churchill objection!
would've been good if he'd spent his evenings composing odes to animal sexuality though...

William Hurt is one of less than five actors I can actually name as being an actor that I like. He acts by not acting...it's a very minute process with him that can be mistaken for not being able to act - I guess it's a little har to tell the difference, but he seems to enchant the films that he's in with a langour that makes me like him. Signs still scares me to this day, I mean, what if I don't have a baseball bat or an obsessive compulsive toddler in the event of an alien invasion?

I do know what you mean since last night, but in eg AI and Dune he just came across as wooden.

But I guess those are examples of films he has been in where that kind of behaviour would be lost. Have you seen Kiss of The Spider Woman?

I've only seen it once, when I was 13, but I was entranced...from what I remember, it's a very Alex film. Hurt is amazingly tender in it - I wish I had a copy...
