Talk about magic, metal and the weather and you get seven comments. Discuss Highgate and make a 'Yours!' joke, you get 109. I'll bear that in mind, then...

Caught up with Str8X over pizza last night. Sometimes I swear I'm the only person in La Porchetta who actually finished their meal but, as she noted, her calzone really was the size of a badger. We head up to rendezvous with her boy at the Boogaloo, but if Tuesday's pop quiz is popular, it's practically deserted compared to Wednesday's film quiz. Also, for whatever reason, the film fans seem to smoke a lot more. An awful lot more. So instead we head up to The Wood(s)man(s) (external and internal signs seem divided on the matter), which is less hideous than it looks from outside, and toast the demise of Jane Root.

Perhaps it's an after-effect of her travails last night but the moon is reasserting her dominion. Huge and Hollywood as she ever gets.

La Porchetta++

Is that the one on Stroud Green Road, yes?

Yes. The original, as I understand it. I've never been to any of the others.

We went to the one on upper street a while ago. It is not nearly as nice.

I'm not sure that they're part of a chain. There's one in Muswell Hill which I seem to remember has a sign saying "We are not connected with any other restaurants with the name La Porchetta." Which is odd, as again, it's not as good as the Stroud Green Road one. You'd have thought they'd want to associate themselves with such a fine place. Instead, they just encourage diners to sing deafening versions of "Happy Birthday" whenever someone in the place has a birthday (every time I've ever been in there.)

The Finsbury Park branch has (or at any rate had) signs denying any association with the Muswell Hill establishment, but advertises the other three on its menu. Apparently all five have a very similar look, menu &c. Quite what's going on I've never understood but yes, it is a chain, and no, the Muswell Hill one isn't part of it.

I've got a soft spot for the Finsbury Park one. In 1992 they were about the only Italian restaurant in London that my then girfriend could go into, and ask for pizza without cheese without causing so much as a raised eyebrow. In fact, once they said "would you like spinach instead?". Although in retrospect, perhaps they were taking the p1ss.

Having also been romantically entangled with a cheese-avoider, I can appreciate the importance of that.

Man, there's nothing as sexy as a cheese-avoider.

I appear to have been to three of them. I once ate an entire penne vodka at the SGR one for lunch, before realising that the £8 I had just spent was the last £8 I had. Typical Rodders there.

there is as teeny one near here, which i often debate using at lunch time, before deciding i would die of bloat....

The one on Upper St is OK, but not as good (IMO); not been to the Rosebery Avenue one. Apparently the one in Muswell Hill (which I have been to) is not affiliated to the others, despite having an identical menu and 'livery', and serving what seemed to be the same food...

I also like Strada, although it's a bit pricey compared to the budget enormousness of La P's pizzas.

There is a fourth one in the chain, though, in Holborn.

I've always finished my meal there! Usually feel rather unwell afterwards, but it's worth it.

I was noticing the moon last night as well. She was stunning. Wrote some pretty things in my paper journal once I was inside. Quite lovely.

Being so disappointed by the eclipse, and then finding her so impressive on a supposedly normal night, just reminded me how wonderfully fickle she can be. Goddess' prerogative, I suppose...

Indeed. She likes reminding us all who's in charge around here. WE don't tell her when to look her best...

I'm not sure it was even us she was reminding so much as the other astronomical bodies concerned...

I lay on my bed looking up at the clouds drifting across the moon last night. And was reminded of The Rah Band, so I got up and shut the curtains.
