'huge, queer and tawdry' but 'much admired by the public'

I read A Very British Coup a few years ago. Writing in 1982 or so, Mullins got a lot right about the way the country would look by 1990. Too many of the characters are caricatures, but it's a damned good story. Interested to know it's out on DVD, and will have to look out for it - can put it next to the House of Cards trilogy, anjd see if they fight for supremacy.
