Whilst I agree there are echos of things from the future, I still entirely disagree with you, instead I think it more likely that the design followed the tie thing. It seems more natural to have your earphones disect your body than e.g. go down the arm etc. It physically feels safer to have something go down the body than across the neck. It's also to do with the amount of movement a head has to do. Basically I think I am saying that you are insane.
