'huge, queer and tawdry' but 'much admired by the public'

I wasn't so keen on the ending to Peep Show. I mean, I enjoyed it, and I laughed (painfully), but it went a bit wacky sitcom. What I like about it usually is that it's so normal, low-key and plausible, while still being utterly horrifying and dark.
