LOVE YOUR ENEMIES
Confess your sins to Fr. Jamie Manners, Fr. Johnny Valentine & Bishop Sarll at an evening of eclectic, non-conformist pop music. Special guest: DAVID SHAH (Luxembourg).
OUR DJs ARE BANNED FROM PLAYING ANY OF THE FOLLOWING ‘ARTISTS’. Art Brut, Beastie Boys, Bloc Party, British Sea Power, The Fall, Futureheads, Gang Of Four, Graham Coxon, Jeff Buckley, Kenickie, Killers, Ladytron, Le Tigre, Libertines, Nick Cave, Others, Pixies, Primal Scream, Razorlight, Rolling Stones, Sonic Youth, Stone Roses, Strokes, The Tears, Velvet U’ground, White Stripes
Sunday 5 June at The Pleasure Unit, 359 Bethnal Green Road (Bethnal Green Tube), 7pm-12pm. Admission free, indulgences available on request.

I'm on second, from 8.15 to 9.30. Before then, I shall be at Stay Beautiful tonight (I'm most intrigued by what I've heard regarding Do Me Bad Things). And at some point I shall be seeing Sin City, so apologies in advance if my dialogue goes terribly non-naturalistic as a result and I try to DJ in a noir fashion.

What in particular do you have against said "artists"?

For starters they're already overplayed to death in clubs.
From: [identity profile] barrysarll.livejournal.com
Half of them are good, but a bit ubiquitous - there's simply no point in us playing the Killers when anyone who wants to hear them can go to a standard indie night, SB, or even B Movie!
Others are equally ubiquitous, and utter toss to boot.
And at least three have been played at LYE before (two of them by me).

Congratulations, you have actually requested something I own on CD and might conceivably play!
I knew it had to happen eventually.

Is it actually possible to play a Jeff Buckley song at a nightclub?

As stated above, there are plenty of bands on that list that I do like - it's just that they're overplayed.
The Fall, however, are not one of them. If I want to hear a Northern drunk shouting incoherently over a racket, I'll hang around Sheffield bus station.
And 'I Love A Man In Uniform' aside, Gang of Four are just Franz Ferdinand minus the fun.

I agree with the idea of not using overplayed artists, but surely a bit of 'Love Like Anthrax' never hurt anyone?

There are a couple I've heard early in evenings - the more upbeat ones from Grace.

Oh you're such a wrongcoq WRT Go4. And hey, if incoherent drunks aren't allowed at LYE then xst almighty I'm bvggered.

How about What's a Girl To Do by Cristina.

Dude, you don't need to go to a Sheffield Bus Station! You just need to hang around me and Jodie!

If so, then it's hardly living up to its title - love and anthrax are both killers.

Well that's another reason not to play the Fall - it would simply duplicate the clientele. We might as well play a track consisting entirely of introductions by LJtags!

And I've never knowingly heard this Cristina track of which you speak.

I saw the end of The Fall at my first ever Leeds. I couldn't really see what all the fuss was about either.

I am unv=convinced of the wisdom of banning artists form being played. I thought LYE took a more open attitude to music than that, rather than substituting the narrow-minded music policy of nightclubs for a different narrow-mindedness. Or maybe you're being tongue in cheek or something. Either way, it seems odd.

The last time I hung around Sheffield Bus Station I met many kids returning from Gatecrasher.

They're a nine-piece (nonet?) beloved of friends of mine whose tastes otherwise have no points in common.
