Research query: does anybody know whether Jeremy Dyson, the camera-shy member of the League of Gentlemen, did any acting as a child? The Wikipedia entry doesn't mention it, but then it also has the name and current status of his novel wrong.

Using a new iron is not unlike sleeping with someone for the first time; it's not the best you'll ever get with them, but the sense of discovery is a joy in itself. Both experiences also share the ability to lift one out of any grey moods which may have gripped you.

Big Finish have had pretty mixed results when they try to create new companions in their Doctor Who audios; Evelyn's a marvellous invention (because not being on TV, she doesn't need to be young and demographically-tested, and pairing the Sixth Doctor with a cantankerous old woman in a cardigan works brilliantly). But Charlie and Erimem are both posh and ever so slightly annoying in the same fairly pointless way. Hex...well, based on the evidence of The Harvest, he's not bad. But you have to feel sorry for Big Finish, creating a companion whose main character trait is 'Northern', and then running smack into Christopher Eccleston as the new Doctor.
edit: and in further Northern Who news, Peter Kay's in the new series. Oh dear.
(Pretty good story, though, at least until the end where it goes all generic. Obviously, I especially liked casting the European government as villains of the piece)

Hearing about Ali Farka Toure and Ivor Cutler's deaths in the same day felt strange; neither exactly high on my list, I don't think I have a note of either's music with me in London, but I remember them both from the same tapes, my dad's Andy Kershaw recordings. So of course I mailed the parents, currently in France, and they had a tizzy about the subject line 'bad news'. Which I realised was subject to misinterpretation, but when I told them John Peel was dead with no softening up, they complained about that too. Bah. Sir Patrick Moore had best not bloody die on us too. Meanwhile, in modern music news, my respect for the Long Blondes takes a severe knock as their singer tells the NME "It's cool to be associated with the Arctic Monkeys, they're lovely guys."
