For all its undoubted sins, Lost has its merits too - among them, giving a quite astonishing boost to Flann O'Brien's sales.

I have decided that, in a few years time, we should all move to Arundel. Seen from the train, it has always looked like a perfect little English town; now I've visited it and confirmed that. I'll be wanting the castle for myself, of course, but I think there are enough fine houses in the town for everyone else I like too. The charity shops and pubs are good; admittedly, as yet there are no venues but I'm sure somewhere could be converted, and the concentration would soon be communicated to bands that we like, such that they could add us to their tour itineraries, in much the same way that Hebden Bridge quickly built up its lesbian economy.
(There's also a great sight from the train line at night, as you pass the end of a Gatwick runway and see the lights on the planes on approach hanging in the sky one behind and above the other, like a ramp to the heavens)

For anyone still somehow confused over the distinction between racism and Islamophobia - the chair of the Commission for Racial Equality seems to share my views on cartoon protesters and Sharia enthusiasts.

Look, I know there's plenty of evidence that men suck, OK? They do things like murder babies because they're jealous, or embark on a life of serial killing just because they want to be their city's first serial killer, or end up in a shotgun wedding to a goat. And yes, as we discussed on Friday nine years for raping your dying stepdaughter is a stupidly low sentence. But on the other hand - four years for grabbing someone's backside is a bit much - particularly when the other options included the right for the offended party to give the offender a legally sanctioned slap, something I think British law could definitely use.

Gideon's Daughter ought to have sucked - a drama about a PR man realising his job is hollow, and rediscovering the things that really matter? Oh, please! But with Poliakoff and Nighy, it works. Similarly, I thought Meet the Fockers was going to be the sort of sequel I hate, the sort which necessarily invalidates the conclusion of the original - but that too was saved by the details, specifically spoilers )
