I didn't get a copy myself, but over someone's shoulder I saw the Metro article about the flying hotel. It should surprise nobody when I say: WANT ONE.
Yesterday was one of those days when every. single. little. thing. contrived to go wrong in sequence. And then the power went out, so I was reading by flickering candlelight - reading the sort of book that gets under your skin, that demands your full attention, which I wouldn't have been reading if I'd been listening to music as I would have had I had electricity. And there on page 123 (easy as...): "If you are feeling low. If you are so full of poison that you can find no light within you. If everywhere you look you see only bitterness and despair. If all these conditions and situations apply to you, I recommend a refreshing suicide attempt."
Now, if I hadn't been guzzling those stupid little sweets where the anthropomorphic fruit on the wrapper look to be dry-humping each other (an odd impulse buy at the checkout, after an interminable queue), if I'd been drinking instead...well, it makes you think, doesn't it? Particularly since a few pages on there's an equally eloquent counter-argument. Particularly since I wouldn't exist in the first place if my father hadn't only read up to a certain point in a certain novel and not waited for the next installment.
So having reached a new peace, I found myself in one of the most vivid moments of communion I've ever had. And then right on cue the power, after a false and flickering dawn, came on again right in the opening credits of Life on Mars. Sometimes, signs really are that obvious.
I was beginning to wonder what had become of top eighties pastiche musical comedian Gary le Strange, until I heard the new single by The Modern and realised that nobody else could be responsible for lyrics like "You could be my industry, we'll dance together on the factory floor."
