The passing of an age
Dec. 14th, 2004 10:57 amThe final installment of the second best film ever made is finally out on DVD. Last night, I watched it. Today seems a little lacklustre in comparison.
( Return of the King special edition - SPOILERS )
At some stage over my coming break, I shall watch the whole film, all six DVDs of it. This is not an invitation or a social suggestion, not the first time anyway. It's an explanation in case that day finally sees me lose all connection with 'reality'.
The most recent Destiny's Child album, on the other hand, is c0cking awful. Maybe it's just me who, when I loved Destiny's Child, always did so for the dancefloor killers. Maybe it's unusual to adore 'Say My Name', the danceable hypocrisy of 'Nasty Girl' and above all 'Jumpin' Jumpin'' while wishing they'd ditch all those sappy harmonised numbers fit only for chick flick soundtracks. Destiny Fulfilled has two upbeat numbers - you already know the inferior 'Crazy In Love' retread that is 'Lose My Breath', and then there's 'Soldier', which seems to be a disingenuous effort at selling a song about fancying gangstas to a Republican audience. After that it's syrup all the way - and much of it, especially 'Cater 2 U', is creepily pre-feminist. Sad.
And as I typed the above I found another disappointing item in my inbox. The Union Chapel is set to close. I've only attended two concerts there but for a certain sort of band it's an amazing venue, and when London has so many dreadful venues I'd love to see collapse this is tragic news. What particularly gets my goat is that the main blame can be pinned on the church who share the premises and banned alcohol consumption within the venue. Clearly they've forgotten that their man's canonical debut miracle was a spot of viniculture.
