( The Power of Nightmares )
Eight issues in on The Maxx and I'm picking up definite resonances of The Sandman, especially A Game of You. The ambivalent tension between a 'real' and a 'dream' world, the strange creatures, the sense that this is all someone's childhood being played out on a fantasy canvas are all there - but filtered through an underground comix and Image sensibility, rather than literature and DC. I think it suffers for being set in a shared superhero universe; the Savage Dragon cameo felt totally out of place, and I much prefer the idea that the Maxx is an unsuitable hero but the best a city without heroes can find. Still, 12 issues still to go, so we shall see...
Am off work tomorrow, and out of town this weekend. Should be back by Sunday evening so if anything compelling's afoot then, text me.
