Aug. 5th, 2003 10:40 amThe Archway Tavern claims to be North Londons Premier Live Music Venue. Leaving the apostrophe issues to one side for a moment, it's not even Holloway Road's Premier Live Music Venue given the Garage is at the other end. Fvcktards.
It is a rather good little venue, though, in a Buffalo Bars vein. Somewhere one could run a smallscale or specialised night quite happily (assuming the management are OK, of course). Though I may be biased in its favour by it existing a mere 20 minutes pleasant stroll from the House Beautfiful.
Even aside from the already noted cancellation of Lolita Storm, Schmoof had pulled out too, meaning Scarlet Soho were now headlining. The new supports were a solo guitarist/singer who wanted to be Lenny Kravitz and was failing even in that meagre ambition, and a pointless rock band. Still, at least it wasn't Grand Molasses. Scalet Soho themselves were quite impressive, in the manner of Placebo or Depeche Mode; derivative yet pleasingly driven synthrock. The suggestion that their deficiencies come down to the absence of a drummer is of course incorrect; Animal and Keith Moon aside, the correct policy is FVCK DRUMMERS. Most bands who do have them should get a drum machine instead; as a rule, they look and sound better. Doktor Avalanche > Lol Tolhurst.
